U.S. / National News
- Iran War Update
- What happened: Ceasefire negotiations between the U.S. and Iran are stalled.
- The U.S. proposed a 15-point action plan, which Iran rejected and countered with its own proposal. President Trump threatened strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened, later extending the deadline to April 6.
- Iran is allowing some ships to pass, but with heavy vetting.
- Death toll: 1,900 in Iran, ~1,100 in Lebanon, 22 in Israel, 13 in the U.S.
Why it matters: Rising tensions could escalate regional conflict, affect global oil supply, and impact U.S. foreign policy decisions in the Middle East.
- ICE Agents Deployed to U.S. Airports
- Due to ongoing staffing shortages at the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) amid a partial Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding shutdown, President Trump has ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to airports nationwide to assist with security duties.
- ICE agents are meant to help TSA at checkpoints, but they are not trained for standard security screening, and many have been observed with limited defined roles in airports.
- Long TSA lines continue to persist nationwide despite the deployment, and Congress has repeatedly failed to fund DHS due to disputes over immigration enforcement and oversight.
- On March 26, Trump announced he would sign an emergency order to pay TSA officers, but it is unclear if Trump has the power to allocate funds this way.
Why it matters: This unusual use of ICE — whose core mission is immigration enforcement — highlights the operational gaps caused by the shutdown, raises legal/ethical questions about ICE’s role in domestic airport operations, and affects travelers and federal workers already stretched thin.

Philadelphia / Local News
- CE Activity in the Greater Philadelphia Area: WHYY reporter Emily Neil composed a write up of ICE activity and how the Greater Philadelphia Area is addressing this activity. These are some of the most notable points:
- Detention centers: Most people detained by ICE in Philly are sent to the Federal Detention Center Philadelphia and Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Philipsburg, PA. ICE plans to convert two warehouses in Schuylkill and Berks counties into detention facilities, but Governor Josh Shapiro is opposing the plan.
- 287(g) Program: Local law enforcement can voluntarily assist ICE after federal training. In PA, 60 agencies participate, including Lansdowne Borough Constable’s Office (Delaware County) and PA State Constable Office Honey Brook Precinct 1 (Chester County). Bucks County Sheriff’s Office ended its participation in January.
- Anti-ICE Legislation: Philadelphia is introducing measures to strengthen its sanctuary policies, including banning local law enforcement from joining 287(g), restricting ICE agents from wearing masks, and preventing the use of unmarked vehicles.
Why it matters: Philly is actively shaping its local response to federal immigration enforcement, balancing public safety with immigrant protections, and signaling resistance to expanding detention operations in the state.
